Jacarandas in McDougall Street in Kirribilli, Sydney

Jacaranda Trees in McDougall Str in Kirribilli, Sydney
Watercolour  38 x 28 cms.
This is my 2nd painting of the stunning Jacarands trees in blossom at Kirribilli.
I get so attached to my own artwork -  so when I gave the 1st one away as a present, I have to simply paint another one for myself.  (No wonder my shelves are for ever filling up with “new”  paintings .

Old Colonial Cottage at Hunters Hill, Sydney

A while back I did a heritage walk through the Hunters Hill in Sydney.
An old established area with beautiful old colonial buildings. This building was on bucket list for a while … but what a nightmare to paint.
DO NOT buy Watercolour paper in advance, do not keep it for months.
My s.c. watercolour paper lost all sizing, it turned into a blotting paper, could not lift any pigment and if you did gently, the paper disintegrated, and bits peeled off. The same happened when I tried to remove the masking fluid.  As I painted the foliage, it simply became insipid so I improvised and have Jackarandas framing the house instead. Had to use pen and ink to finish it off and to give the painting some definition.
Through sheer stubbornness and because I really liked the drawing – an accomplishment for me, I persevered.  Should have chucked it in the bin.

Cesky Rudolec- - Czech Republic, Bohemian Canada

Watercolour 38 x 28 cms
An old dilapidated ruin of a Castle called "Mala Hluboka" in Cesky Rudolec. Somebody bought the ruin for $1 (no joke) with a premise to restore it to its old glory. It is on protection heritage list. So far only the tower has been restored and a figure of "death and a sickle" installed in to the cavity where windows once were.

Bunch of Australian Natives

38 x 28 cm Gouache (Acrylic) treated as watercolour, particularly in the background.
This has taken me many days and hours & certainly was a challenge.
In the “distressed” background I adopted a loose approach as with watercolours, applied masking fluid with a toothbrush, applied several glazes & sprayed with water trying to emulate tonally and visually the Australian bush !

Western Australia Red Flowering Gum

Western Australia Red Gum.   Size 25 x 32 cms, gouache but used like watercolours
Was driving along the side of the road and could not resist this beautiful flowering red gum, some in full bloom, some with only the calyx & then the beautiful large gum nuts. Could not resist and had to break a branch off...but I asked the owner first .

Australian Natives

Australian Natives
Jo Sonja gouache, Size 38 x 53 cms on 150grm Cartridge paper, used WN acrylic sealer on finished painting.
This has been a work in progress for quite a few days, and it is quite obvious why…too many details. I was trying a different approach to using acrylics, in that spraying with water and letting the colours run, wanting a achieve that looser effect of watercolours & loose the fairly solid appearance of traditional gouache paintings... yet keep the colour brightness .. avoid the “muddy appearance” …. I seemed to have always ended up with when using acrylics & white., in many instance I substituted the warm white with other tonally lighter colours to achieve stroke variations & highlights.

Winter Scene_SH FB

A combined excercise among friends on FB. Practising simplification, looseness, and tones. Fairly limited pallet for me WC.38 x 28 cms. Left a bench next to the tree out, because I felt it would stop the eye going into the distance.
